Recently laid off? Learn a new skill, upgrade your profile.

UPDATE: This is now a more formal offering. You no longer need to send email. For more information read this post.

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the economy is not in a good place right now. Since October 2008, more than 300.000 people have lost their jobs in the tech industry.

I’m not saying that being laid off is fun but you could see it as an opportunity. An opportunity to learn a new skill and while doing that, upgrade your profile. There’s still a pretty strong demand for Flash/Flex/AS3.0 skills. So, if you haven’t looked in to those technologies, why not do it now?

If you’re interested in learning Flex, send me an email (serge@adobe.com) and I may be able to hook you up with some stuff ;-)

And for those who already know Flex, do you have any hints about this strong demand you’re talking about ;o) ?
Like a Flex Evangelist job or something. OK, sorry, I already tried this one, but you never know. I already have the evangelist bag.

    Hi Serge,

A couple of months ago i got my first full-time job in the industry as a Flash Developer, previously doing some intern and trainee programs at the same company. At the end of november last Year my boss decided to reduce hours for all of us to around 50%.
In January i decided dive into the flex’ish world, since the stuff i build in flash is somehow always the same(videoplayer’s, galery’s, website widgets etc) and has gotten pretty boring in the last time.
The Flex Video Show provides a good place to begin with, but i’ve figured out that the learning effect is even stronger if I try and error all by myself.

Too bad that my trail ends in two weeks(I hope i can get my boss to buy me a license.) I decided to prepare for the flex-certification. Some hints about the exam would be nice :-)

    greetings from germany

    Mike

The demand for Flex is indeed increasing but if you’re looking for a job and don’t know Java or .NET then I think you’d better learn one of these technologies. The demand for these is far higher and I guess that is pretty important to those without a job…

@Tom: Obviously learning any new skill is a big plus to raise your profile.

There’s very little flex/flash demand in Belgium today, I’ve been looking all over, but maybe in the wrong places? Seems like the only reply you get is from annoying headhunters…

If you happen to know any companies that are looking, please do let me know :)
