Tim Smit is a Dutch student who did most of this work on his own… He recorded the footage in his hometown and edited it in his bedroom… He used After Effects and 3DS MAX for the special effects. Total budget spent: €150.
He puts the video on YouTube. When the video hit 500k views (already over 1 million views now), he starts getting calls from all the big Hollywood studios. They are baffled when he tells them how it’s made and how “big” the budget was… So far none of the Hollywood studios have made him an offer but he is now talking to a couple of them about actually producing his movie.
Make sure you watch it in high quality! Amazing work!

Wow!! Amazing.. Imagine: The Netherlands becomes the next Hollywood… with a completely new budget story!
Admit it: its wicked :)
Hij was 2weken geleden te gast bij de wereld draait door>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8rRb4z0gVA
inspired by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1UPMEmCqZo ?
They’ve also put a lot of work on expanding the experience, the main website (http://babel-research.eu/) containing the background story and some hidden messages (!) Really fun !
Amazing what ingenuity can do. Why do the major studios spend $100+ million on their films? A good deal of that goes for the FX; they hire a big FX company, which then charges them for their propitiatory software and their hours of work. Well, here, a student has used a set of off-the-shelf tools to put them to shame. Why aren’t the studios hiring some of these starving artists? Why don’t they try it out and see how it goes for a change, instead of shelling out millions for their films, many of which don’t fare all that well at the box office anyway? How much will it cost them — 150 Euros?
Actually we are now in the realm of movie making that is not geocentric. If he did this on a raft in the pacific they would not set up studios there. This is something people in the industry saw when the first non-linear editing systems came into the consumer market. Now major films can be made in collaborative networks with many people in many places connected by networks. Still nothing like a good sound stage, but Hollywood has become a planet of movie making.
€150… of course…
didn’t pay for the software, didn’t count the hours he worked on it, the space to put the equipment in, the actors, the fee for shooting outside, etc etc.
It’s not that good. There are students at the dutch filmschools doing much better!
Actually to #9, the €150 budget is rather possible. 3DS Max isn’t all that super expensive if he got it as part of school offerings.
Don’t hate my friend ;) it’s a testament of his hard work!
its a cool little movie, but yeah, a professional movie would cost a lot more. its easy to have a low budget when you dont have to pay for anything or anyone, heheh. actually, i wonder what he spent the money on. the box thing? maybe a phone?
Wooh !
Very impressive & professional looking, especially for a student with only 150€.
It should be noted that the basic plot looks a lot like the Halflife video game series…. and many of the sound effects are taken directly from Halflife 2, so it would be difficult to get a movie deal without copyright issues.
I’m glad I know what im looking for. It gets quite boring staring at this screen all day but, I found your view very informative. Might I ask what other AutoDesk products you use or plan to use?
this film is OK but the vfx ,blood on his hand, explosion weren’t convincing , i like the idea but but its not visually pleasing
Hi, I’m VFX student, and I’m doing my final project that have a similar camera, does anybody knows how he put the camera to shoot like that? I mean…what camera, and things like this??? Thank you, and sorry my english..
@Debbie: I’m not sure which camera was used to create this piece but I’ve seen absolutely amazing things from the Canon 7D.
Any good HD camera would do… the effects are done in post in AE…
