Multi-screen development sessions: Help wanted!

multiscreen.jpgWith Flash On The Beach and MAX fast approaching, it’s about time to start prepping my multi-screen development session and lab for both events.

Before I can get started though, I need to come up with a good idea for a multi-screen application and I need your help in deciding which direction I should go.

So… What type of application would you like me to build for this session and lab? Entertainment? Food? Travel? Video? Photo? It can basically be anything as long as it has an in-the-browser version, a desktop version and a mobile version. I do have some ideas in my head but can’t decide on which one to use… That’s why I’m asking for your help!

Now, I’m not asking you to come up with a complete concept (but you can if you want to ;-) ). I’m just asking you to tell me what type of app you would like to build in the BYOL-lab at MAX and have me explain/show in my session at FOTB. I’ll reward the best idea with a goodie bag ;-)

Feel free to post your thoughts as a comment or use the contact form.

What about a wine and food pairing application? There’s a bunch of websites where one can get that information, but none of them are sleek, fashionable and modern enough to be placed where its potential might lead it to. Such as high-end restaurants, kiosks, or just regular online access be it through the www, desktop or mobile phone at your local wine bar or shop.
    Hope it helps!

I’d vote for some sort of concert booking application — where you can browse artists, see video, book tickets, choose your seats and have an electronic receipt of the ticket you bought on your phone.

I would go for a media-centric application as these typically are well suited for a multi-screen setup: while the media/photo/video/presentation is playing on the big screen, you can queue items, interact with the flow, hand pick feedback items, adjust the timing on another/smaller screen.
some sort of real-time/live presentation mixer.
So: 1 screen for the “public” display, 1 screen for the control panel. – just my 2-cents though – might even be too obvious.

I guess it depends on how simple or complex you want the app to be. As far as simple, I think some sort of public to-do list would be awesome. So you (or someone you trust) could publish things to do to your list and no matter where you are you know a) what they are b) when they need to be done and optional c) the level of which they are (ie. from the wife might have a higher level of something from you even if it’s later than something before).

So you could be watching TV or on your phone and a new to-do could come in that you could peg to the corner of the screen or just ignore.

Another neat idea might be some sort of short message service. Think DM in twitter meets MSN. So you have a mini-email system that alerts you on any device that gives you the option to read and respond.

Alright that’s enough rambling from me, but hopefully I’ve maybe inspired some ideas!

Well, it has to be simple and it has to demonstrate multi-touch capability -

Why not create a flash video player that responds to touch commands when it’s on a multi-touch platform? You have your standard hide-on-mouse-out control bar when it’s on a non-touch device, but when you have touch access it switches to a “skin” which is completely invisible and just responds to gestures:

Tap to play, double-tap to pause, hold one finger and drag another forward or back to seek, etc etc etc.

That’s one instance where you can integrate multi-touch technology to truly add something to the experience, rather than just porting a generic experience to a multi-touch scenario for the technology’s sake. Plus, to my knowledge nobody has really done this yet – there’s always some kind of control bar chrome, even over the iPhone. You have a chance to create the gestural video control standard here. Sounds win/win to me. :)

The most common answer would be maps application or some kind of media player, but I would go for a simple multiplayer game or basic drawing application with shared (among the users) whiteboard.

What about a web development Tool… Most of the Time when i Build stuff i Need multiple tools to Be Open e.g. Photoshop, Flash, flashdevelop, browser. It almost always feels like that i cannot have enough screens. To Bad that it doesnt fit to your requirements.

    Best regards,

    Mike

    What about a travel application.
Along with destination search, photo sharing option can also be added to it. so it should able to share photos on all these platforms like mobile/web/desktop/TV.

with travel u can add entertainment/search options with integration of map/geo location and local data.

I am visualizing it in a way that say i m on a travel, i ‘ve clicked some picks/video n my mom is watching those pics on her refrigerator screen. wouldnt it be amazing?

How about a F1 track running through all the displays and a car zipping through each of them one after the other. Would give a v.good view of all the monitors being able to coordinate with each other and guess what you can create a race track (circular) with the cars zipping through each display.

Each display unit can show different parts of the circuit!
