Learn ActionScript 3.0 using Flash Professional CS4

In the summer it’s usually a little quieter at work so why not use this quiet time to learn something new? ActionScript 3.0 for instance. Doug Winnie, Adobe’s group manager for designer/developer workflows, just started a new series on Adobe TV titled: “ActionScript 1:1″.

ActionScript 1:1 is a free training resource that combines video tutorials, documentation and sample files to teach you the basics of ActionScript 3.0 using Flash Professional CS4. The course is specifically designed for Flash designers and animators who want to add some custom interaction using ActionScript 3.0 but need a little bit of help getting started. Doug starts off with the very basics and then gradually explains more ActionScript that will make your designs and animations interactive and dynamic. He makes it very easy to understand and I’m sure you’ll be coding ActionScript 3.0 in no time.

ActionScript 1:1 is available on Adobe, through RSS and on iTunes. See Doug’s blog for the links to the videos and the sample projects.

Need help switching to AS3.0? Check out the Migration Cookbook

A lot of Flash developers are still using ActionScript 2.0 to code their Flash based projects and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, ActionScript 3.0 gives you lots of benefits. For instance, the performance of ActionScript 3.0 based applications is far greater than AS2.0 based apps and you also get a ton of new Flash Player APIs and community libraries.

Today, we launched a new ActionScript technology center on the Devnet site with links to a variety of resources and tutorials. The Migration Cookbook is a good place to start. There’s also a downloadable PDF version that will get you up to speed with ActionScript 3.0 in no time.

Building Flash applications for Facebook just became a whole lot easier

facebook.jpgFacebook and Adobe have just released an ActionScript 3.0 Client Library for the Facebook Platform API. This will make it a whole lot easier for Flash developers to build applications for the Facebook Platform using Flash, Flex and AIR.

If you have already built a Flash based application for Facebook in the past, you’re probably wondering what is so new about this release. While there are some unofficial libraries out there, many of these struggle to stay up to date with the rapidly evolving Facebook Platform. Today’s release makes ActionScript one of three officially supported languages of the Facebook Platform. The new AS3.0 Client Library is fully supported by Facebook and Adobe. Both Facebook and Adobe are committed to making sure that this library is kept up to date and provides the best experience for developers building on both platforms.

Danny Dura published a quick start video tutorial that will get you building Flash apps for the Facebook Platform in no time. We’ve also created a dedicated area on the Adobe Developer Connection that has everything you need to get inspired and get started.
