Great news for developers

It’s always nice to wake up to great news!

Apple’s announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe’s Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool. This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases.

This is great news for developers and we’re hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store. We do want to point out that Apple’s restriction on Flash content running in the browser on iOS devices remains in place.

Adobe will continue to work to bring full web browsing with Flash Player 10.1 as well as standalone applications on AIR to a broad range of devices, working with key industry partners including Google, HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Palm/HP, RIM, Samsung and others.

Flash on Android summer camp (in Belgium)

The summer is always a good time to learn about new technologies or brush up on new features in the technologies you already use.

Belgian training center Oak3 is organizing a 2 day Flash on Android Summer Camp on August 9th and 10th. On the first day you’ll learn everything you need to know to get development going, either from Flash Professional CS5 or from Flash Builder 4. The second day you will be assisted and guided in creating an app so you’ll be on your way for further mobile Flash Platform experimentation.

I’m going to pop in on the second day to see what you guys are building and to answer any questions you may have.

For more information and registration check out the Oak3 website.

Adobe Loves HTML5: HTML5 extension pack for Dreamweaver CS5

Just 2 weeks ago at Web2.0 Expo, Kevin Lynch promised that Adobe would create the best tools in the world to author HTML5 and CSS3. Today Adobe is pleased to make a technology release available of the Dreamweaver CS5 HTML5 Pack extension. This extension provides initial support for HTML5 and CSS3 in Adobe Dreamweaver CS5, and helps you easily create  HTML5 pages and CSS3 styles.

Available now on Adobe Labs!

Here is Adobe’s Jorge Taylor showing the capabilities of the HTML5 extension pack for Dreamweaver CS5.

Number 5 is alive!

CS5 is here!

Just to make things clear… If you thought the Packager for iPhone was the single new feature in CS5, then boy were you wrong! CS5 has over 250 improvements and new features! These are a couple of my favorite new features in Flash Professional CS5.

New text engine
The new text engine in Flash Professional CS5 now allows you to fully leverage the power of the Text Layout Framework available in Flash Player. With the new Text panel you’ll create multi column text and link multi text boxes in no time.

Snippets panel
The new Code Snippets panel is the easiest way to add ActionScript to your project. Developers can easily add their own code snippets and designers can just add functionality to their project with just a few clicks.

ActionScript editor
The Actions panel finally got some love as well. It will now do code hinting and code completion even for custom classes. Yay! But if you want a more robust coding environment, you can now also opt to edit your code in Flash Builder 4.

XML based source files
If you use a source control system, you’ll be happy to know that Flash Professional CS5 can now save your projects in an uncompressed format.

New additions to the deco tool and IK. Video improvements like a new cuepoint editor and on-stage scrubbing, SWF size history, FXG, lots of updates in Device Central, better workflows with other CS5 tools, … And then we’re only talking about Flash! There are 17 tools in Creative Suite that have all been updated and that have all gotten new features!

I can’t wait to see what you will create with it!

Don’t miss the CS5 launch event in about 8 hours and 40 minutes from now!
