After a very successful and fun tour though the UK, SOTR is now going to mainland Europe. Most of you know that my love for ColdFusion is growing with every project I do using it. I think you can really only appreciate ColdFusion after getting a taste of it and SOTR is the perfect place to get that taste. With SOTR Europe being a free event, there really is no excuse to not be there. ;-)
A few weeks ago, most of us on the Platform Evangelism team reached out to the developer community, offering free Adobe Flex Builder 3 licenses to unemployed developers so they can learn a new skill and raise their profile. Needless to say that we were swamped with email requests. Today, this is now a more formal offering, with information and access to the program available at https://freeriatools.adobe.com/learnflex/

I’m sure you’ve all heard about people who are stuck abroad because of the ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland. Lots of people are missing meetings and work because of this situation.

Learn ActionScript 3.0 using Flash Professional CS4
In the summer it’s usually a little quieter at work so why not use this quiet time to learn something new? ActionScript 3.0 for instance. Doug Winnie, Adobe’s group manager for designer/developer workflows, just started a new series on Adobe TV titled: “ActionScript 1:1″.
ActionScript 1:1 is a free training resource that combines video tutorials, documentation and sample files to teach you the basics of ActionScript 3.0 using Flash Professional CS4. The course is specifically designed for Flash designers and animators who want to add some custom interaction using ActionScript 3.0 but need a little bit of help getting started. Doug starts off with the very basics and then gradually explains more ActionScript that will make your designs and animations interactive and dynamic. He makes it very easy to understand and I’m sure you’ll be coding ActionScript 3.0 in no time.
ActionScript 1:1 is available on Adobe, through RSS and on iTunes. See Doug’s blog for the links to the videos and the sample projects.

Nokia releases Flash Lite components
I can’t believe I missed that but a few weeks ago Nokia released a free set of Flash Lite components on Forum Nokia.
The set consists of a button component, contacts list component, list component, media data component, popup component and scrollbar component. They’re all very easy to use and also customizable.
Kudos to Nokia for releasing these! Flash on!

Learn Flex in a week (or less) for free

How about learning Flex in a week for free? We’ve just published a complete set of training videos with the accompanying exercises for you to test your newly learned skills. The training not only covers all the basics but also more advanced topics like creating your own Flex components with custom events and validating and working with data. Learn about ColdFusion 8 in your backyard (free eseminars)
I have to be honest with you guys. I have only recently started playing with ColdFusion 8 but I am rapidly falling in love with it. CF really does dramatically/extremely increase your productivity. The amount of code you have to write to do pretty complex things is amazingly small compared to other server-side code.
If you haven’t had a chance to dive in to CF8 yet, Kristen Schofield (ColdFusion product marketing manager) just published a list of free webinars starting on July 8th. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about ColdFusion 8′s new features and powerful capabilities.
